Overview

A 5v5 tactical shooter featuring Agents with unique abilities — Riot's first breakout success after League of Legends. I helped establish the initial character roster and art style.

CHARACTERS

"Agents" are at the heart of what makes this game distinct from its contemporaries. I joined the team at a point where both the art style and the character roster were getting a reboot. We had a clear directive: create an iconic cast of hero characters which all share the same rig and use the same weapons, but have access to unique utility abilities. With the restrictions that came from the standardized hitboxes and hyper-competitive nature of the game, this task was a challenge on its own, but was even more so due to the fact that we were trying to nail down the art style simultaneously, all in a tight window ahead of the planned launch. Having so many constraints certainly made it a very engaging puzzle to solve. The trickiest bit was figuring out how to create significant contrast between the characters while keeping them standardized in all the major ways. In the end, we accomplished what we set out to do and the rest is history.

KEY ART

My friend and colleague Su Ke, under my direction and alongside Atey Ghailan, developed the key art illustration style and single character format. These would end up being used to great effect in the hands of the marketing visual design crew, complemented by fantastic graphic branding. Su Ke then extrapolated this style out to create the Drew Struzan-esque posters which have accompanied every episode since launch.

The VALORANT team as I knew it was an incredible place to be. Looking back, it is humbling to think I was given the opportunity to help define these aspects of the game. Like any real difficult challenge, there were some high highs and low lows. There are a handful of people that helped me personally navigate the rapids, contributing their expertise and insight, and it was only with their support and collaboration that we made it to ship.

A special thanks to the Character Team as of launch. It was a privilege and an education to work with such a group of talented and dedicated individuals.
